Bournemouth’s Castlepoint Shopping Park has, over seven years, focused on recycling waste and last year achieved a milestone by achieving zero waste to landfill.
Now the management team is stepping up its ongoing fight against energy wastage. Over recent months, and over many visitors heads, Gareth Dix, Senior Electrical Engineer at the park has been working high above the top deck of the car park replacing over 100 of the original bulbs with new energy saving LED lighting.
Peter Matthews, General Manager at Castlepoint, said that the £35,000 investment will contribute to their battle against bills and energy wastage: “Since 2004 Castlepoint has saved an average of 100,000 kilowatts per hour each year but achieved a saving of 41,000 kilowatt hours last year. Our aim now is to minimise the power we use to light the centre down to only 1 million kilowatt hours per year, without reducing the safety and comfort of our shoppers. We have 211,000 kilowatt hours to lose. The installation of the new car park lighting will also mean less time required on maintenance and the lights are controlled by both sensors and timers to be even more efficient.”
Future plans include LED lighting for the lower level car park which already has energy saving lighting in sections that automatically dims when sensors detect no movement.
