Ferndown Upper School came out victorious in a very close, competitive game against St Peter’s School in the U16 Dorset County Cup Final held at Chapelgate.
In the first 15 minutes Ferndown pushed hard against a determined St Peter’s midfield and solid defence. A break away counter attack however from St Peter’s midfield ended in a spectacular goal scored by Jamie Wilkinson(1-0). This took the wind out of Ferndown’s sails for the rest of the half as St Peter’s continually attacked.
The second half started with Ferndown using the wind advantage to play long balls deep into St Peter’s half. A few minutes in, Ferndown’s Sam Surridge linked up with a long pass and equalised. Ferndown continued to challenge and played wide creating gaps in the defence, which led to a quick second goal by Ferndown’s Charlie Kendall (2-1). St Peter’s rallied and created a chance for Lewis Maguire to place a well – placed shot resulting in another tie (2-2).
Late into the second half Ferndown’s Matt Neale swerved his way around several defenders and crossed the ball for Sam Surridge to volley home the winning goal.
Special mention to St Peter’s centre backs Harry Grant, Daniel Lombard Bishop and Ferndown’s Charlie Kendall, Kieron Francis, Kieran Francis, Matt Neale, Sam Daver and Sam Surridge for outstanding play during the match.
This is the second year in a row that the players from Ferndown have lifted the county title.
