Sea serpents, giant lobsters and the footsteps of dinosaurs were just some of the highly imaginative creations at Bridport Arts Centre’s Sculpture on the Beach event at Hive Beach on Sunday 20 July.
Run in partnership with The National Trust, this annual event encourages families to get creative and make some wild art using only things they find on the beach. Twenty teams took part using a wide range of materials including sand, sticks, stones, rope, flowers, shells and seaweed to create a range of wonderful exhibits. The winning entry by Team of Tom was a castle complete with stone drawbridge, portcullis and battlements.

Entrants also had the chance to complete challenge number 18 on the National Trust’s list of 50 things to do before you’re 11 ¾ – create some wild art. Zoe Stansfield from The National Trust, who had the difficult job of judging the competition, said: “It was really tricky to pick a winner from this year’s entries – each one was fantastic in its own way. It’s amazing what can be created from everyday objects on the beach with a bit of imagination and effort. Everyone I spoke to said they’d had a great time making their work of art, which is what it’s all about. Hopefully it’s inspired families to try this and other 50 things activities on the beach this summer.”
Kate Wilson, Bridport Arts Centre’s Learning Coordinator said: “It’s always amazing to see the range and quality of sculptures on show and there were some fantastic entries this year. We were bowled over by how creative and imaginative the pieces were.”
