Two new iPads have been funded by the League of Friends at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital – a ‘valuable resource’ for breast care nurses.
The tablets will be used during consultants with patients to show pre and post-operation images and inform them about the benefits and possible complications of surgery. They cost £1,300, which includes essential additional programs.
Last year there were 1,500 fast track referrals from GPs to the Royal Bournemouth Hospital and more than 330 people were diagnosed with breast cancer for the first time. The breast care nurses see newly diagnosed breast cancer patients as well those who are further on with their treatment and will use the iPads at all clinics.
Amanda Iskender, breast care nurse, said: “The digital images will enhance discussions of surgery and the iPads are so light and portable. I truly believe that they will allow us to spend more time with patients and less time on office-based work. We also won’t have to cart big bulky, heavy, folders containing surgical photos which we are thrilled about.
“We are very grateful to the League of Friends for its generous support with funding the iPads – they are going to be such a valuable resource.”
Rosie Havers, Chair of the League of Friends, said: “Making a difference to patients and helping staff to do this is the real focus of the League of Friends. We are very pleased that the two iPads will help free up some of the nurses time so they can spend more time with their patients.”
