The Priest’s House Museum & Garden is opening a new exhibition on Friday 25 March.
‘Scenes of Wimborne and East Dorset’ features watercolour paintings by the artist W.J. Hawker.
The exhibition takes the visitor on a journey, starting with the natural landscape. Animals appear and then signs of human activity emerge, as the artist introduces shepherds tending to their sheep. The scenes take in country lanes and cottages, along with daily chores such as the laundry. People are encountered taking a leisurely stroll or travelling by horseback. A tantalising glimpse of the town is shown in the background of many of the paintings, recognisable by the two towers of the Minster.
Little is known about the artist. However, the recent discovery that a photographic board had been used as a mount for one of the paintings offers a clue. The exhibition continues until the 2 July.
‘Scenes of Wimborne and East Dorset’ has been supported by a grant from the divisional budget of local Dorset County Councillor, Robin Cook, along with Wimborne BID and Otto Kampf.
‘Dress to Impress’ is the new costume exhibition, also opening on the 25 March, and will explore clothing for special occasions.
‘For Home and Country – 100 Years of the Women’s Institute’, the exhibition celebrating 100 years of the WI, has been extended until the 4 June.
