Discover the secrets of Bournemouth’s lost archaeology in a talk on Wednesday 3 August at Bournemouth Library.
As Bournemouth is a relatively young town, talking about its archaeology may seem premature. However, Ordnance Survey maps published as the town expanded showed numerous ‘tumuli’, which vanished beneath the new streets and houses.
Thomas Hardy drew attention to this aspect of Bournemouth, which he called ‘Sandbourne’, in his novel ‘Tess of the D’Urbervilles’, in which he wrote: ‘Within the space of a mile from its outskirts every irregularity of the soil was prehistoric, every channel an undisturbed British trackway; not a sod having been turned there since the days of the Caesars.’
It is likely that Bournemouth has lost much of its archaeological aspects, and one of the tasks of modern archaeologists is to discover what has happened to the various artefacts dug up all over Bournemouth.
Bryan Popple will be explaining all about Bournemouth’s lost archaeology. Learn about the ancient landscape below the streets of Bournemouth, and enjoy a cuppa and a biscuit. The talk takes place on Wednesday 3 August, beginning at 11am in Bournemouth Library.
