After weeks of extensive research into the past, students have presented their idea of how Bournemouth should look in the future.
Over the past six weeks, pupils at the town’s St Peter’s School have been working with the Cooper Dean archive to create a vision of Bournemouth in 2026 based on the town’s heritage.
The ‘Our Town’ project involved students using their own knowledge alongside research into the town’s history using archives held at the Dorset History Centre, Dorchester.
Based on this work, the pupils then designed a view of how they thought historical street scenes should look in the future. Pupils presented their ideas to Bournemouth councilors and development partner Morgan Sindall who will consider them as part of the future development of the town.
Giovanna Coombes, 13, said: “It has really encouraged us to put more effort into our work because we feel like we could make a real difference in our community.
“We did a lot of research because we were keen to help make the area safer. I’d really love to see some of our plans used in Westover Road.”
The work will be displayed alongside images from the Cooper Dean archive, which will be available to view at Bournemouth Library, the Littledown House and the website www.streets-of-bournemouth.org.uk in the summer.
