Regeneration: Just Can’t Stop the Music, Wimborne Musical Theatre

Feet were tapping as a 19-strong cast staged 34 numbers, which over the years have been huge hits. From Rock Around the Clock, which arguably started off the pop culture in 1956 to the 90s hit Spice Up Your Life, they were all songs that resonated with the audience.

They were linked by a story. Grandmother (Pam Mizon) and Grandfather (John Bounds), who were moving house, reminisced with their family, daughter (Selina Rumbold), son-in-law (Duncan Sayers), and grandchildren, Jemma Cable and Calum Hearne.

Medleys made famous by groups such as The Four Seasons and Abba worked well, but I did feel that some of the songs were a little too challenging for the company and maybe should only be tackled by professionals.

Having said that, some performances do need highlighting.

Jemma Cable is always a bundle of energy and her rendition of Joan Jett’s I Love Rock’n’Roll was raunchy and spot on. She always lights up the stage, as does Calum Hearne, who appears with a number of different companies.

Mikaela Buckby gave an impressive rendition of Proud Mary with Selina Rumbold shining on a number of songs such as Lady Marmalade.

Duncan Sayers is a confident performer and he did well with Upton Girl, as well as several other numbers.

The concert, which made for an entertaining couple of hours, finished with just three Christmas songs, Last Christmas, White Christmas and All I Want for Christmas is You.
