Residents in parts of East Dorset will not receive rubbish or recycling collections on Good Friday (29 March). Instead, collections will be carried out the next day, Saturday 30 March.
East Dorset District Council and, since April 2011, the Dorset Waste Partnership (DWP) have traditionally collected waste on Good Fridays.
However, since the start of the new ‘recycle for Dorset’ service in parts of the district in October, changes to staff’s terms and conditions mean that East Dorset collection crews no longer work on Bank Holidays.
This also affects weekly rubbish collections in the area where the new service starts this June. Areas with a Friday rubbish collection include parts of Corfe Mullen, Pamphill, Shapwick and Sturminster Marshall.
Fortnightly recycling collections that would have fallen on Good Friday will also be done on the Saturday.
The Good Friday change is in line with the current practice for other public holidays, including Easter Monday. Residents whose collection would have been on Monday 1 April will receive their collection on Saturday 6 April. Residents can also check their calendar card for their recycling dates.
Mike Bell, Head of Operations for the DWP, said: “This small change simply reflects what we do on other public holidays and should not cause too much inconvenience for residents. If your rubbish is usually collected on a Friday, please put your sacks out by 7am on Saturday 30 March and it will be collected that day.
“Before the new ‘recycle for Dorset’ service starts in June, all residents in the area will receive a new calendar including any changes to their collection dates following public holidays.”
