Hoarding group for Dorset residents
Anyone who simply cannot get rid of things that are no longer of use to the detriment of their lives is invited to this support group.
Many of us know of someone who fails to get rid of things no longer needed – but in extreme cases it can be a huge mental health problem.
Mindful of this Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service Safe and Well Advisor Michelle White has set up a support group to help those living with hoarding behaviour.
Working with BCP Council, Sovereign Housing and Poole Housing Partnership, the group offers a place for individuals and families affected by hoarding to share concerns, challenges, and successes. There will be support with practical help and the ability to share feelings relating to hoarding behaviour and gain a better understanding for all.
Hoarding is a complex issue that goes far beyond untidiness or indecisiveness.
Hoarders can fill entire rooms from floor to ceiling, leaving themselves the minimum space in which to live. This retention of belongings presents a real fire risk and makes it far harder for firefighters to be able to tackle any blaze and delay the escape of occupants.
Michelle said: “Hoarding is a mental health illness and there are very limited support networks for people living with this condition. I see people on a weekly basis who experience different levels of hoarding and felt that a support group was needed. I am so pleased that our partner agencies have been able to support this project.”
The sessions will be held on the first Tuesday of each month starting on 5 April at Trinidad Village, Rossmore Road, Poole from 5pm-6:30pm with the support from BCP Council, Sovereign Housing and Poole Housing Partnership.
The group is for anyone who is affected by hoarding and their family members, the group will be confidential, a non-judgemental environment promoting help to people to help themselves, with the offer of advice and support on practical solutions
