Long jail sentences for Bournemouth manslaughter
Michael Bastable was killed on 14 January this year and three local men have been jailed for his death and for robberies.
Three Bournemouth men have been jailed for the manslaughter of 56-year-old Michael ‘Shaun’ Bastable in January this year.
Damien Sean Johnson, 31, and Hayden Johnson, 29, both of Christchurch Road and Dominic Macdonald, 30, of St John’s Road, were sentenced at Winchester Crown Court on Friday 15 July after admitting the manslaughter of Michael Bastable.
The three defendants also admitted charges of robbery relating to the incident involving Mr Bastable on Friday 14 January 2022 and a second incident on Wednesday 19 January 2022. Damien and Hayden Johnson both also entered guilty pleas to a third robbery on Friday 21 January 2022.
Damien and Hayden Johnson were sentenced to 22 years in prison, with an extended licence period of a further three years, and Macdonald was given an 18-year jail term.
Mr Bastable was found unresponsive in an alleyway off Shelbourne Road on the afternoon of Friday 14 January 2022. He was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.
It was subsequently established that his bank card had been used after his death and his bicycle had been stolen.
An investigation was launched by detectives from Dorset Police’s Major Crime Investigation Team (MCIT), who recovered CCTV footage showing Mr Bastable walking in the direction of the alleyway shortly before he was found unresponsive, with the three defendants seen in the area moments later.
Further footage also captured the defendants leaving the area, with Hayden Johnson riding a bicycle.
Around 40 minutes later, Hayden Johnson took a Scott mountain bike into Cash Generator in Christchurch Road and sold it for £100.
The other charges related to an incident at an address in Christchurch Road on the evening of Wednesday 19 January 2022, where a man was assaulted and had cash stolen, as well as an incident in the basement area of an address in Christchurch Road two days later. On this occasion the victim was struck with a baseball bat and his watch and wallet were stolen.
Detective Inspector Wayne Seymour, of MCIT, said: “Our thoughts continue to go out to the family of Mr Bastable and I again would like to thank them for their support throughout this investigation.
“Nothing will ever make up for their loss, however, I am pleased that through the efforts of our investigation team we were able to identify the men responsible for his death as well as further violent robberies.”
