The new multi-use games area now installed in the Verwood Memorial Recreation Ground is proving popular with all ages and also with the local Opportunities Group for the less able who are able to access the area with their wheelchairs.
Active Games For All (AGFA) planned and fund raised for the MUGA. When work started on the foundations, the Recreation Ground was in a sorry state due to flooding and this entailed extra foundation work, taking the cost of the project to nearly £103,000. Verwood Town Council have funded £50,000 and AGFA have raised the remainder by grant support from The Veolia Environmental Trust, Synergy Housing Trust, Christchurch & East Dorset District Council, their own fundraising and funds donated by many community groups and individuals. Chairman, Angela Daymond, explained: “Once the Verwood Town Council offered up to £50,000 in match-funding, grant providers that had previously been unable to help because their funds would not be spent soon enough, now had a change of heart.
“We are delighted at the way the project has come together so quickly with their help. The other day I heard children playing football in the MUGA invite some other children to come and join them for a game. This was in the true spirit of what we hoped the MUGA would achieve.” The Official Opening of the MUGA takes place on Saturday, 4 May at 11am when the Mayor, Cllr Simon Gibson will accept the MUGA on behalf of the Town Council.
Verwood Concert Brass Training Band will provide the fanfare and music and Rossgarth Junior Footballers will demonstrate its use.
The photos certainly demonstrate its popularity! Waste of money from the look of it!
