Remembrance services in West Moors, Wimborne and Ringwood
There will be parades and Remembrance services throughout towns and villages in Dorset which local people are invited to attend.
Locally, services will be held in West Moors, Wimborne and Ringwood, along with most local towns and villages, have a number of events planned to mark Remembrance.
On Remembrance Sunday, 12 November, West Moors will pay respects around the War Memorial at the Petwyn with the honouring of the two-minute silence and witnessing the laying of many wreaths by various local groups, organisations and authorities. The procession commences at 10.30am from Riverside Road. People will line the streets to watch the parade and pay tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country during conflict. This year, the parade and service will welcome the new Reverend of St Mary’s Church, Michael Eaton.
A Remembrance Day service and parade will be held in Wimborne Minster with a service in the church on Sunday 12 November at 3pm. It will be conducted by the rector of Wimborne Minster, the Rev Canon Andrew Rowland, and assisted by other clergy of the town. The address will be given by the Rev William French, chaplain of Wimborne Royal British Legion. Before the service commences there will be a parade, starting from the Royal British Legion on West Borough and eventually ending at the Minster.
After the service individuals and organisations will gather at the War Memorial on Minster Green and will be invited to lay wreaths remembering all the fallen of past and current wars. This will be followed by a two-minute silence. All are welcome to attend. Please be seated in the church for 2.45pm.
In Ringwood over the Remembrance period there are a number of commemorative services taking place.
On Saturday 4 November there will be a service at the War Graves in Ringwood Cemetery. Poppy crosses will be laid on the graves of service personnel whose last resting place is Ringwood. This service is open to all; meet in the Cemetery car park at 10.45am and then walk to the graves.
On Armistice Day, Saturday 11 November, there will be a service at the War Memorial at 10.45am and at 11am the National two-minute silence will be observed. In accordance with local tradition, the start and end of the silence will be marked by the firing of a maroon which will generate a loud bang to be heard around the town.
On Sunday 12 November, Remembrance Sunday, there will be various services around the town after which a parade will gather in the Market Place from 11.30am. Shortly after, those assembled will process to the War Memorial Garden where there will be a short service followed by the formal Act of Remembrance at 12 noon. This will be followed by a formal wreath-laying ceremony and a procession back to Market Place.
Members of the public are invited to attend and to bring their own tributes, which may be laid at the appropriate time. A short road closure will be in place to allow the procession to take place safely.
