Dorset ranked 5th best region for caravanning
Warm temperatures and high campsite ratings help to place Dorset in the top 10 UK regions for caravan holidays.
As the summer months approach, caravans are likely to be a regular sight on Dorset’s roads, carparks and campsites. According to a new study, that’s because the county is one of the top 10 regions in the UK for caravan holidays, thanks to the warm temperatures and highly rated campsites.
The report placed Dorset in 5th place, behind Kent, Derbyshire and East Sussex. The Isle of Wight nabbed the number one spot, thanks to its large number of hiking trails and attractions.
The study was put together by retailer GO Outdoors, which compared over 100 caravanning destinations in the UK to reveal the best choice for a summer holiday. GO Outdoors gave each region a score out of 10 based on several factors including cost, user reviews of campsites, the amount of annual rainfall and average temperatures.
Dorset scored a respectable score of 9.14 out of 10. Out of the top 10 destinations, Dorset had the best rated campsites (77 per cent of the 57 campsites analysed for the report are rated four stars or above) and joint highest average maximum temperatures in July of 22 degrees Celsius, tied for first place with West Sussex and Hampshire.
Unfortunately, Dorset’s score was let down by the high amounts of rainfall. Average annual downpour was reported at 918mm, making it the second wettest region in the top 10, behind Cheshire’s 1,012mm of precipitation.
Dorset also had a comparative lack of hiking trails (136) and listed attractions (586) compared to the top scoring Isle of Wight which boasts 289 trails and over 1,000 attractions.
Still, the report helps to explain why Dorset attracts so many caravan holidaymakers each and every year.
