Dorset businesses aim to get Westminster working for the Southwest
A business event held on 16 July focused on getting Westminster working for the Southwest as part of a series of regional roadshows.
The Great South West Pan-Regional Partnership and Dorset Chamber hosted a regional roadshow at Bournemouth University on 16 July, giving local business leaders the opportunity to advance their interests on the national stage, and have their say on the region’s future.
It was the second of four Regional Roadshows, with others planned for Somerset and Cornwall.
The event brought together senior business leaders, investors, and local authorities to spotlight the region’s business community, with delegates including: Cecilia Bufton, chair of Dorset LEP; Graham Farrant, chief executive of BCP Council; Ian Girling, chief executive of Dorset Chamber; Ian Jones, head of External Engagement at Bournemouth University; Karl Tucker, chair of Great South West; Matt Prosser, chief executive officer of Dorset Council; Paul Tansey, chief executive of Intergage Group and Simon Boyd the chief operating officer of REIDSteel.
Karl Tucker said: “The Dorset Regional Roadshow demonstrated the huge potential and ambition of our business community. The insights shared will be essential in shaping our voice with the new government, ensuring that the Southwest is heard loud and clear in Westminster. It’s clear that with the right investment and support, our region can play a pivotal role in driving the UK’s economic growth.”
Panel discussions on key topics such as skills development, infrastructure needs, and sustainability initiatives were featured.
Ian Girling added: “This event was a fantastic opportunity to showcase the innovative spirit and resilience of Dorset’s business community. By coming together, we’re sending a clear message to Westminster about the untapped potential in our region. The Southwest is ready for significant investment and growth, and events like this help ensure our voice is heard at the highest levels of government.”
The Great South West continues to drive engagement and champion the region with events and activities throughout 2024, including further roadshows, economic and sector insight reports, Westminster events, and a major national conference in September.
The success of the Dorset Regional Roadshow builds on the momentum generated by the previous event in Devon, further strengthening the collective voice of the Southwest business community.
