Dorset residents asked to share views on Chesil Cove curved sea wall
Residents, visitors and businesses are invited to have their say on proposed works to repair the Chesil Cove curved sea wall in Portland.
Dorset Coast Forum is inviting residents, visitors and businesses to have their say on proposed works to repair and update the curved sea wall in Portland’s Chesil Cove, a popular bathing and diving spot.
The sea wall was built in 1965 to deflect waves and prevent slumping of the land above, which includes the A354 main road. Repairs were made in 2011, but these have now been undermined. Various studies show that urgent action is required to fix the wall and prevent the sea damaging the land and road.
The proposed work scheme for the cove includes removing the 2011 repair works, replating the sheet pile and repairing the wall. The plans also include adding a geotextile blanket and rock revetment to the beach to absorb and dissipate waves.
Dorset Council’s FCERM team along with consultants Jacob’s are currently working on a business case for the works. If approved, they would then need to obtain planning, funding and licences. Work on the sea wall is thus unlikely to begin until 2026 or 2027.
The team is now looking to engage the local community and will be holding events over the next month. These include:
- 23 September, 6pm–7pm, online event with a presentation and Q&A session
- 25 September, 1.30pm–4pm, a public drop-in event at Portland Community Venue.
Esmari Steenkamp of Dorset Council’s FCERM team said: “This is an important piece of infrastructure for generations to come and we are working with experts to achieve the best solution.
“The curved sea wall protects not only the landscape but houses, businesses and roads. Therefore, we want to encourage the entire community to come and speak to us. It is important that they share their opinions on the proposal.”
