On your marks… Poole fundraisers to race across Dorset
Teams from Lily’s Place, a children’s respite home in Poole, will complete a challenge in November to raise funds for a new bus.
Teams from Lily’s Place, a children’s respite care home in Poole operated by the charity Diverse Abilities, will tackle a challenge in November to raise funds for a new bus that will transport children for days out at the home.
The teams will be tasked with racing each other across Dorset on foot and by public transport to hit checkpoints and reach the finish line in just one day.
Lily’s Place supports children and young people with complex physical and/or learning disabilities, offering overnight and short breaks during the week, at weekends and during the school holidays. A new bus would enable these children to get out and explore the local area, as well as take trips further afield.
Lucy Kirby, assistant manager at Lily’s Place, said: “We’ve been set the challenge of racing across Dorset to raise vital funds for a new bus at Lily’s Place. We will be given check points on the day which we will need to get to either on foot or by public transport, but with the catch of not having any money to spend.
“It’s going to be a challenge, but we are really looking forward to it, and we hope to really make a difference.”
Natalie Corrini, mum of George who attends Lily’s Place, said: “A bus at Lily’s Place will enable George to go out and about in the community whilst he is at Lily’s Place.
“George doesn’t like being inside for too long as it can make him feel trapped. Going out gives him the sense of freedom where he can see and touch the world around him from his wheelchair. George has limited mobility and uses very few words, but he uses his loud voice to say ‘Hello’ when he sees people.”
