South Western Railway offers veterans free travel for Remembrance
Armed forces personnel and veterans can travel to Remembrance Sunday events for free on South Western Railway services.
Train operator South Western Railway is reminding armed forces personnel and veterans attending Remembrance events in November that they can travel for free on the nation’s train services.
Military personnel travelling in uniform or able to show appropriate ID will be able to take advantage of the offer throughout Great Britain. The free travel offer is funded by the Department for Transport.
As well as travel to local events on Remembrance Sunday on 10 November, the offer extends to travel to Waterloo on either Saturday 9 or Sunday 10 November for the National Service of Remembrance at the Cenotaph, returning on Sunday 10, as well as travel to Waterloo on either Saturday 2 or Sunday 3 November for the Submariners’ Remembrance Service on Sunday 3 November.
However, veterans should note that there are planned engineering works taking place at various locations on the SWR network in South West London, Surrey, and Hampshire on Sunday 3 and Sunday 10 November, and factor this into their travel plans.
Peter Williams, customer and commercial director for South Western Railway, said: “Remembrance Sunday is an important opportunity for people across the country to reflect on the sacrifices made by generations of service personnel.
“Alongside the rest of the railway industry, we are pleased to honour this sacrifice by offering free travel to active personnel and veterans attending Remembrance Sunday and London Poppy Day events.
“This initiative is especially meaningful to us, as many of our SWR colleagues have a proud background in the armed forces.”
