Dorset Council to hold Armistice Day service
As well as Remembrance Sunday services taking place in Dorset, services will also be held on Armistice Day, 11 November.
Remembrance services will be taking place throughout Dorset this Sunday 10 November, with Dorset Council holding a service at 10.45am on Armistice Day, 11 November at the Memorial Area at County Hall in Dorchester.
The service will be led by Revd John Yarrien, and introduced by Cllr Stella Jones, chairperson of Dorset Council, before the Act of Remembrance.
Durnovaria Silver Band will be in attendance and the names of those members of the County Council staff who lost their lives in Active Service during the War, will be read out before HM Lord-Lieutenant Mr Michael Dooley is invited to read the Exhortation, followed by the Last Post, two-minute silence and Reveille. The Kohima Plea will be read by Queen’s Gurkha Signals Sergeant Mahendra Rai.
St Osmund’s School Choir will perform acapella followed by the laying of the wreaths.
The service will be streamed live on the council’s Facebook page (@DorsetCouncilUK) and residents are invited to join online or in person, to remember and honour those who fought and died in the line of duty.
Cllr Stella Jones said: “We will honour the sacrifice of the fallen and valour of our veterans.
“We will remember and reflect on the sacrifices made by military personnel and those who have lost their lives as a result of armed conflict or terrorism and all those who have defended our freedoms and protected our way of life.
“We hope that residents will join the Service via the livestream or in person and we encourage people to mark the two-minute silence at 11am.”
This year, the council took some time to sit down with some local veterans to discuss their time in the service and what Remembrance Day means to them.
Other towns in Dorset will also be holding ceremonies on Armistice Day.
