21st century technology to come to Swanage Railway
WiFi is to be connected to Swanage Railway as a pilot to see if it can work on rural and older railway networks.
Swanage Railway is to become the UK’s first WiFi connected steam train.
A project is being piloted to test if it can work on even the most rural and oldest railway networks.
Dorset Council has been awarded £163,000 government funding from DSIT (Department for Science) as part of the national Rural Connectivity Accelerator programme.
The council has teamed up with tech company Excelerate Technology UK to bring satellite-powered public WiFi to Purbeck Park car park, Norden train station and on board the railway’s popular steam service from early 2025.
Cllr Richard Biggs, Dorset Council’s deputy leader and cabinet member for Property & Assets and Economic Growth said: “This is a groundbreaking project at Swanage Railway, which could help pave the way for better connectivity in the future.
“Not only will it enhance the visitor experience for people using the railway, but it will explore how these technologies can improve services in remote areas.
“It is a fantastic example of how we’re working towards a more connected and inclusive Dorset, ensuring that everyone benefits from digital innovation.”
The project addresses the need for reliable connectivity in areas with challenging landscapes and limited service from traditional network operators.
Using a combination of advanced connectivity solutions, including Low Earth Orbit satellites, Excelerate Technology UK will create a reliable WiFi connection for Swanage Railway.
Swanage Railway contributes more than £15m to the Dorset economy every year. Having better connectivity will enhance its services by enabling cashless systems, helping to ensure its continued success as an important tourist attraction.
By demonstrating the effectiveness of advanced technology in rural areas, this initiative sets a precedent for similar projects across the UK.
Gavin Johns, chairman of the Swanage Railway Company, said: “The Swanage Railway is delighted to be partnering with Dorset Council and Excelerate to deliver enhanced rural WiFi connectivity on trains and at Norden station.
“As we look forward to 2025, with Rail 200 celebrating the bi-centenary of railways in the UK and the 140th anniversary of trains to Swanage, this is a great opportunity to show that old and new can work together for the benefit of rural communities and our customers and staff.”
