Mudeford preschool evicted from its home after 37 years
Mudeford Wood Preschool has been asked to leave Mudeford Wood Community Centre, despite having used the site for four decades.
A preschool in the Mudeford area of Christchurch has been told to leave the site it has used for 37 years.
Mudeford Wood Preschool must leave Mudeford Wood Community Centre at the end of the school year, in July 2025.
In an online statement, the trustees of the Community Centre claim that the preschool had repeatedly broken fire and health and safety regulations, and continually breached its contractual terms and legal agreements.
The trustees said: “It is of important note that Mudeford Wood Community Trust (MWCT) Trustees have a legal obligation to ensure compliance for the safety and well-being of all Hirers of the Mudeford Wood Community Centre.
“The Pre-school’s behaviour, its impact upon all Centre hirers and their users, plus their refusal to comply with the law and their legally enforceable obligations put the Centre in jeopardy and at risk of immediate closure by the statutory authorities. This would impact everyone that hires or uses the Centre and could no longer be tolerated.”
MWCT said it had involved local authorities including councillors in the situation to try and get the preschool to abide by its contractual obligations but to no avail. The Trust intends to seek a new care provider to hire the space and provide “a superior service to that currently provided with a 52 week wrap around facility.”
In response, Mudeford Wood Preschool Manager Emily Hernon said: “I was heartbroken and dismayed to read the baseless allegations made in their statement, and I feel it is necessary to address them immediately.”
Addressing parents and carers who used the service, Emily said: “Our absolute priority is your children’s safety and wellbeing, so the Trust’s statement that we are breaking Health and Safety and Fire Regulations was very upsetting.
“I want to assure you that we do NOT break any statutory Health and Safety or Fire Regulations. We are heavily regulated by Ofsted and the DfE, and we have Ofsted Inspections and regular visits from the Early Years Team at BCP to ensure that we are meeting all statutory requirements.”
The decision has provoked frustration among parents who use the preschool as well as locals. Christchurch resident Darren Webb said on Facebook: “Why would a local community trust want to do such an un community thing. We are all living in a time where all communities need to come together. More so now than ever. Staggers belief.”
