Local students prepare to brew up a storm in Christchurch
Trainee baristas from Autism Unlimited’s ‘Brew Crew’ of trainee baristas will be causing a stir at Christchurch Living Advent Calendar this week.
Talented trainee baristas from Autism Unlimited’s Portfield School Sixth Form will be causing a stir as they wish ‘brew’ a Merry Christmas at Christchurch Living Advent Calendar (CLAC) this week.
CLAC runs from 1 to 24 December and raises money for charity by featuring surprise performances by local acts each day.
Portfield School Sixth Form’s ‘Brew Crew’ will be present at Saxon Square today, Wednesday 11 December, alongside the surprise evening performance. Brew Crew is an initiative set up by the Autism Unlimited charity to equip its young people with practical work experience as they transition into adulthood and employment.
Small teams of students at the Sixth Form in Airfield Road, Christchurch, enjoy 10-week courses with professional barista Tim Hewitt, with lessons taking place inside a former coffee horsebox, which has been fully fitted out by the charity as a mobile coffee bar.
Students in the Brew Crew learn about coffee’s origins, how it is grown and harvested, study different coffee strengths and are taught how to make and serve drinks including cappuccino, latte, and espresso.
Hewitt said: “The Brew Crew made their public debut at the Rotary’s Bonfire Night last month and made and served 100 coffees in just under two hours. They have taken this exciting new enterprise and really run with it.”
He added: “Our musical students have been performing at CLAC every year since it started and it’s a wonderful event. Our band will be performing a mix of festive and pop songs, and our Young Ambassador Nevaeh Dunmore will also be singing too. The Brew Crew are very excited to be playing a part and while we are anticipating high demand for our coffee, they are ready to rise to the challenge!”
Brew Crew member Kayvon, 14, said: “My parents were really proud to see me as part of the Brew Crew on Bonfire Night. We are all really looking going to the Living Advent Calendar and showing people what we can do.”
The Brew Crew is available for private hire and corporate events. If you are interested in finding out more about how they can support your event and to give Portfield School students the chance to build their business, please contact: tina.flower@autism-unlimited.org.
