Wimborne enjoys a successful Save the Children parade
Wimborne’s annual festive parade drew huge crowds and enjoyed sunny weather.
After several weekends in which bad weather disrupted and cancelled festive events across the county, Wimborne enjoyed clear skies and bright sunshine for its annual Save the Children parade on Saturday 14 December.
The parade featured bands, dancers, vikings from Poole and colourful characters, as well as classic cars, floats carrying schoolchildren, and a convoy of giant steam engines. A police car and fire engine led the parade, and many of the floats threw sweets to children in the crowd.
The parade left Brook Road at 2pm, travelled along Leigh Road and then completed a circuit around the town via King Street, West Street and the Square. A huge crowd turned out for the event, filling the streets of Wimborne to enjoy the spectacle. There were also market stalls and fairground rides in the Square, with Father Christmas making an appearance to hand out toys to children.
The event aims to raise awareness and funds for the charity Save the Children. It was started by former mayor Margery Ryan in December 1989.
