5 fun facts about daffodils
It may still be winter but in Dorset the daffodils are poking their heads firmly out of the ground. Have you got one in bloom yet? If so, do post a picture on our Dorset View Facebook page for others to see.
Here are our five fun facts about daffodils:
1
Friends: They are the birth flower for March
2
Romans: They were introduced into gardens in about 300BC and were brought to Britain by the Romans
3
Countrymen: They are part of the narcissus family, which has over 50 species
4
Lend me your ears: The petals are mostly yellow or white and the cups (coronas) come in a variety of colours: pink, orange, red, green, yellow or white or a combination of these colours.
5
I have come to bury Caesar, not to praise him: The flower stems contain poisonous sap, which can shorten the vase life of other blooms and your dog can become ill and vomit if he/she drinks water that has daffodils in it. The bulbs are poisonous.
And surely we all know the first verse of ‘I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud’ by William Wordsworth. If not, here’s a reminder:
I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o’er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.
