Autism Wessex has received funding from Dorset Fire and Rescue to install retro fit sprinklers in the new residential home ‘Greenways’.
Autism Wessex and Dorset Fire and Rescue contributed towards the costs of the sprinkler system which will benefit the four young adults who have recently moved into their new home.
Dorset Fire and Rescue Service Business and Partnership Engagement Officer Emma Turner, said: “In May 2012, a serious fire occurred at a local premises. The occupant of the fire affected room was lucky to escape and was treated on the scene for smoke inhalation. Emergency procedures were followed and all other occupants were able to leave the building safely. Whilst no one was injured, the fire damage was severe, resulting in the occupants belongings being destroyed. Should anything like this happen at Greenways, the new sprinkler system will activate in the affected room and will put the fire out.
She added: “We have shown our commitment to the promotion and use of sprinklers within Dorset’s buildings by providing 50% of the cost of the sprinkler system and working in partnership with Autism Wessex. We are committed to delivering this initiative to protect our communities and are currently working with others who are interested in this approach.”
Autism Wessex is the regional charity which provides lifelong care to people affected by autism. The charity has a growing portfolio of residential homes using a model of four people sharing a house with staff employed to meet the support needs of the residents.
Jon Wyatt, Head of Residential Services for Autism Wessex, said: “We are extremely grateful to Dorset Fire and Rescue who have helped fund the sprinkler system which is fundamental for keeping our residents safe. We hope we never have to use the sprinklers but it is essential they are there in case of a fire.”
Autism Wessex aim to open a new residential home each year to ensure those who need residential services can access small-scale residential care and personalised support in a specialist environment.
