Flames were thrown, astronauts, acrobats and bicycles flew, mermaids sang, huge jellyfish floated and the iconic bandstand rocked.
Featuring fiery sea-front gatherings, projection-mapped trees, dancing metamorphosing horses, sonic orbs, giant coast guards on blades, kids’ raves, marauding clowns and urban poetry, Bournemouth Arts by the Sea Festival was a surreal and intriguing experience. Over 80 diverse performances and acts were enjoyed by 110,000 festival goers over eight action-packed days (8-15 October).
Bournemouth Borough Councillor Lawrence Williams, portfolio holder for Tourism, Leisure and Arts said, “Once again Bournemouth has hosted a wonderful festival of art, culture and diversity which had tourists and residents alike entertained and inspired.” He thanked the Arts Council England for all their support and creative inspiration.
The sixth annual autumn festival took in Bournemouth’s stunning sea-front and beaches, award-winning gardens and various venues including the Russell-Cotes Museum, Pavilion Dance South West, Shelley Theatre and the Bournemouth Natural Science Society.
Festival director, Amanda Barrie, said it had been “a great success, with wonderful performances, strong commercial interest, incredible autumn weather, record attendances, amazing audience participation and an incomparable atmosphere.”
Plans are underway for next year’s Arts by the Sea Festival and the dates will be 14-21 October 2017.
