Poole’s oldest medieval domestic building needs volunteers to help maintain its beautiful historic gardens.
Scaplen’s Court Herb and Physic Garden, seen as an oasis of calm by many who visit, was originally designed in the 1900s by renowned garden architect, George Dillistone.
Dillistone, who designed the gardens at Castle Drogo, created the hard landscaping that you can see today. After many years of neglect, the garden was restored to its former glory in 2000 by a team of museum volunteers and community sponsors.
Open to the public from May to September, volunteers are needed to help look after the garden whilst coordinating a number of tasks. These include:
- Organising stewards rota and managing the diary
- Checking in with museum front of house
- Working with Culture Volunteer Poole on recruitment of stewards
- Training new stewards
- Discussing museum events with staff
- Meet with museum and arts manager to discuss progress and future ideas
- Organising two annual garden events for stewards
Cllr Xena Dion, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for a Prosperous and Sustainable Poole, Borough of Poole, said: “This is a wonderful opportunity for local people who can spare a few hours a week or a month to volunteer. We are looking for people who share our passion for this beautiful hidden gem.”
“As part of the Poole museum team, your input will be highly appreciated and valued in this rewarding role.”
