A care assistant at Care South’s Queensmead care home in Christchurch is planning on defying the odds by taking part in the London to Brighton challenge later this month, following an accident where doctors said she may never walk again.
Bev Allerston was left with a severe head injury, multiple breaks to her lower right leg, and a cervical spine fracture, when a car hit her in 2002. Hospital staff believed that Bev would need a carer, due to the severity of her brain injury. Since then she has made a remarkable recovery and proved the professionals wrong, now working as a carer herself.
Eleven years on, Bev is embarking on the 62½ mile walking challenge to raise money for the charity Headway, who supported her as she recovered from her accident.
Determined Bev has been training for the event by eating healthily and walking exceptional distances locally, such as 21½ miles from Sandbanks to Hengistbury Head with her friend Karen, who is also taking part in the challenge.
The London to Brighton Challenge will be taking place on 25-26 May and is expected to take Bev and Karen 30 hours to complete. All the staff and residents at Queensmead are wishing Bev the best of luck as she takes part in the challenge.
