A group of lady cyclists from Christchurch have undertaken a 150km cycle ride in Majorca to raise more than £2,900 for the local Boo charity.
The ride was organised by Christchurch councillor Claire Bath who had already done previous fund-raising cycle rides and had trained for them on the island. She put a call out to a number of friends and six of them put their hands up to do the cycle ride while two more offered to be support drivers.
The money they raised – £2906 in total – will be used to provide education and life skills to a group of young women in Nyamache in Kenya as part of the ‘Seeds of Hope’ project. They will be supported to set up small businesses offering services such as dressmaking, cooking or agricultural work.
Claire said: “We know a group of men who do a fund-raising cycle ride every year for the Boo charity and we decided that we should do something similar.
“It was quite hard work doing the ride, particularly the hilly parts, but we had a lot of fun and it’s great to have raised so much money for such a worthwhile charity.”
Founder of the Boo charity, Russell Hicks, added: “We’re very grateful to the ladies for the money they raised. It will help tremendously in an area of Kenya where we are working to increase the life skills and opportunities available to young women.”
