Christmas hampers to be delivered to Bournemouth families in need
Citygate Church and Bournemouth Foodbank are organising the delivery of 200 hampers to families in need.
Families in the Bournemouth area who are struggling over the Christmas period are to receive hampers courtesy of Citygate Church and Bournemouth Foodbank.
The Christmas Hamper Appeal is mobilising hundreds of volunteers and partners to deliver 200 hampers filled with food and seasonal cheer delivered right to the door.
Now in its eighth year, a fleet of 70 drivers will be hitting the road on Monday 23 December.
Local businesses, charities, statutory agencies and community groups have already registered their support for the project, nominating families, pledging food donations, recruiting volunteers and raising funds.
Last year, a total of 75 partners teamed up with hundreds of volunteers to deliver 200 hampers feeding 778 people (340 adults and 438 children).
Each hamper contained enough food and festive cheer to last them for three days including a whole chicken, fresh vegetables, Christmas pudding and a £10 toy voucher.
George Farquhar, mayor of Bournemouth, said: “I had an absolute blast helping out last year and look forward to volunteering again. It is incredibly well organised and a precision-driven operation with huge dollops of joy. I’m delighted to join everyone’s efforts to bring happiness during a difficult time of year for struggling families.”
A family of three generations all with long-term health conditions, said: “We were struggling because of benefits and bills and not being able to get out of the house to do the shopping. I’m a carer for my mum so life is tough. It made my Christmas when it arrived. It was huge. I was just expecting a few bits and bobs, but it was Christmas all at once. I could feel my worries go away for a little while because I knew that we could be like everyone else and spend Christmas together having a proper Christmas with proper food.”
A family of five in temporary accommodation said: “Thank you so much for the hamper. It contained a Christmas that we would never have had. We were absolutely amazed by the generosity of everyone involved. It helped us to have a proper Christmas that we could never have afforded. The looks on the kids’ faces said it all to me and made me cry and made everything more bearable.”
