Some of Allenbourn Middle School’s book group recently took a trip to the Museum of Army Flying at Middle Wallop. The Year 8 students have been reading the book Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein, and the visit provided some illuminating background to the novel.
The trip focussed in particular on women in World War Two, and what they were expected to do.
The book, though fiction, is based on historical events, and tells the story of two young women, one a pilot and one a spy, caught up in the events of Nazi-occupied France in 1943. “It really brought the story to life,” commented one member of the group, “and made me see the story in a different light.”
