Community groups receive coronavirus charitable funding
East Dorset Citizens Advice (EDCA) is amongst 100 groups who have received funding from Dorset Community Foundation.
Following the launch of the Foundation’s Dorset Coronavirus Community Fund six weeks ago, half a million pounds was raised, £300,000 of which has been quickly awarded, and £5,000 goes to EDCA.
The grant to EDCA will contribute to the recruitment and training of additional volunteer advisers who will be responsible for helping people who are suffering from mental health issues arising directly from the results of the pandemic.
East Dorset Citizens Advice has seen an increase in the number of clients who are experiencing a multiple set of problems, including financial difficulties, social and family breakdown and physical illness. These problems are often made worse when a person is living alone and these stressful situations are having a negative effect on people’s mental health and well-being.
Dorne Hardyman, chief officer of Citizens Advice East Dorset, said, “We are extremely grateful to DCF as this grant will make a big difference to the people of East Dorset. We are an independent charity and rely upon grants, donations and fundraising to fund our services. This grant will enable us to provide valuable mental health advice and support as the long-term effects of this pandemic become more apparent.”
MyTime Young Carers also received funding to enable the charity to reach out to young carers all over the county at a time when they are likely to be feeling particularly isolated and overwhelmed.
Penelope Day from the charity said, “The money will go straight into MYTime @ Home, our online programme launched specifically in response to the coronavirus crisis, and designed to provide young carers with the support and bite-sized opportunities for relaxation they need right now.”
Grant Robson, Foundation director said, “I am overwhelmed by people’s generosity which has enabled us to play a significance part in Dorset’s response to the crisis. We have made grants to foodbanks, community transport, older people’s groups, health and disability support, community volunteers, food deliveries, homelessness, mental health and family well-being, to name a few.
“We are by no means finished, with the help of local companies, charitable trusts and individuals we will keep making grants. There is a long and difficult road ahead and we need to pull together and help the most vulnerable during these difficult times.”
