Roads were closed as a new cutting edge MRI scanner was crane lifted into Nuffield Health Bournemouth Hospital on 7 July.
MRI machines use radio waves and magnetic fields to investigate and study the brain, spinal cord, heart and blood vessels and other internal organs, such as the lungs or liver, bones and joints. They can diagnose conditions such as Alzheimer’s, stroke, arthritis, lung and prostate cancer as well as damage to muscle and ligaments in sports injuries.
The new scanner will allow complex cardiac MRI scans as well as the more traditional diagnostic tests to take place. It has been established through a joint partnership between Nuffield Health and Alliance Medical, Europe’s leading provider of diagnostic imaging services, and will be available to scan patients from August 2013.

We believe that this latest addition will not only better serve local residents but also help to alleviate pressure on MRI waiting lists in the South West.”
