The Priest’s House Museum & Garden in Wimborne Minster is holding a ‘Faces of the First World War’ public appeal event on Saturday 20 February, 11am to 3pm.d Entry to the museum will be free for visitors attending the event to share their information or for research assistance.
The museum is appealing for photographs of the period that record the people from East Dorset who served in the armed forces. It is also looking for photographs that reveal life on the home front. These might include photographs of the women of East Dorset who stepped forward to fill the traditional male roles, working in local industry or agriculture, or those who worked as nurses.
It wants to uncover the stories and experiences behind the photographs, and any surviving letters, diaries, postcards, medals or other artefacts that local families have kept.
The museum would like to hear from members of the public who have information, stories or items that can help build a picture of what the people of East Dorset did during the First World War. If anyone is interested in researching a family member’s involvement in the conflict and would like help discovering more, advice and guidance can be provided.
This event is part of the museum’s project ‘The One Hundred Year Heritage of the First World War for Wimborne and East Dorset’, which is running throughout the period marking the centenary of the war, and will give local people the chance to research the effect of the war across the district. The project is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund.
