Dorset towns fly high to celebrate the Commonwealth
The fly a flag event to celebrate Commonwealth Day on 13 March will see 950 locations in the UK and across Commonwealth countries raising flags at 10am to recognise the values of belonging to a Commonwealth country.
Events will be hosted around the UK and across Commonwealth countries on 13 March to celebrate the inclusivity and diversity of the two billion people within the 53 Commonwealth countries.
Locally Wimborne Minster mayor Cllr Mrs Sue Cook will be raising a flag on behalf of the town with the chairman of East Dorset District Council at the Royal British Legion; similarly the mayor of Verwood, Cllr Mrs Susan Shaw will be hosting an event on Ferrett Green in Verwood.
Cllr Mrs Cook said “I am proud to co-host this event on behalf of Wimborne Minster Town Council, together with the chairman of East Dorset District Council, and delighted that although this initiative is only in its third year, participants, including many young people across the Commonwealth will also be raising the flag at 10am in recognition of the values of belonging to a Commonwealth country.”Taking approximately 10 minutes, the ceremony will be followed with tea and coffee and residents are welcome to join the mayor and the chairman just before 10am.
There will also be a short ceremony to mark the Single Commemorative Act marking the Centenary of World War One when a candle will be lit as a symbol of hope.
In Verwood, four of the local schools will be represented at the raising of the flag. A letter from the Commonwealth Secretary General will be read out as will the Commonwealth Affirmation, everyone is welcome at 10am on Ferrett Green.
