The Priest’s House Museum & Garden in Wimborne will offering free entry on Saturday 22 October,10am to 4.30pm to mark Wimborne Food & Drink Festival.
The museum is appealing for photographs from the time of the first world war that record the people from East Dorset who served in the armed forces. It is also looking for photographs that reveal life on the home front. These might include photographs of the women of East Dorset who stepped forward to fill the traditional male roles, working in local industry or agriculture, or those who worked as nurses.
The museum would also like to uncover the stories and experiences behind the photographs, and any surviving letters, diaries, postcards, medals or other artefacts that local families have kept. The museum would like to hear from members of the public who have information, stories or items that can help build a picture of what the people of East Dorset did during the First World War.
Visitors will be able to discover life on the home front, in particular recipes used in the kitchen from the period. They will also be able to test their knowledge with a First World War food quiz.
This event is part of the museum’s project ‘The One Hundred Year Heritage of the First World War for Wimborne and East Dorset’, which is running throughout the period marking the centenary of the war, and will give local people the chance to research the effect of the war across the district. The project is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund.
