Haskins Garden Centre at Ferndown has made thousands of Unwins poppy seeds available for schools and organisations who wish to plant the seeds next spring, ideally in bright areas of earth, to support the commemoration of the First World War Centenary next year.
The war is estimated to have claimed over 16 million lives across the globe, and poppies were the first flowers to grow in the recently turned earth of soldiers’ graves.
Julian Winfield, Chief Executive of Haskins Garden Centres, says that he hopes that organisations ranging from churches and schools, to army, air and sea cadet units, will find appropriate locations in the area to sow the seeds.
“We hope that real poppies will act as a reminder of the sacrifices made by so many during the centenary of the start of the Great War,” said Julian. “We have not been able to secure many poppy packs due to the demand so they will be issued on a first come first served basis.”
