Barrie and Shelia Smith of Mayfield Close in Ferndown are this year’s recipients of the Ferndown in Bloom shield and £100 worth of Haskins Vouchers as their front garden received a score of 35 out of a possible 40 points by Ferndown in Bloom judges.
Cllr Lyn Ovens, a frequent winner of the accolade in previous years, led the judging team, which unanimously decided that the Smith’s garden deserved the highest marks.
The shield and vouchers were presented by Cllr Jean Read, the Chairman of the Ferndown In Bloom committee and Simon Morris, General Manager of the Haskins Garden Centre, the competition sponsors.
Barrie, a retired motor mechanic, and Shelia, a former home help, say that over 11 years they have lived in Mayfield Close, they have worked on the garden most weekends.
“We do get people saying they admire the garden, especially the water feature based on two wrought iron well wheels, that I reproduced as a project and which won gold at the Hampton court flower show in 2002, “ said Barrie. “This is the first year that we decided to enter and we are delighted with the result.”
Barry and Shelia will be attending the formal presentation evening held at the Haskins Restaurant on Thursday 26 September from 6.30pm where all the category winners will receive their prizes, trophies and certificates.
Simon Morris said: “We are pleased to support this important event in the community and everyone is welcome to attend the presentation evening.”
