Relay for Life organisers and supporters gathered to promote the next 24-hour event to raise money for Cancer Research UK which will take place locally at Ferndown Leisure Centre on Saturday 29 June from 12 noon.
One of the star survivors, 5-year-old Charlotte Jackson (pictured next to the mascot, Buttons the bear), encouraged people to take part and said: “People should do it to raise money (for CRUK) which will help me and other people with cancer and leukaemia.”
The 24-hour event held at Ferndown Leisure Centre, consists of teams with members of all ages and fitness levels. During the relay participants take it in turns to walk around the track whilst listening to live music and joining in a wide range of family friendly activities including Zorbing. Competitions between teams allows for a little friendly rivalry in attempts to win cups and prizes, and even in the pouring rain there’s no stopping the marathon party.
In a bid to raise money for the festival style event, several family friendly fundraisers have been organised over the upcoming weeks. On Saturday, 18 May a sponsored Zumbathon will be taking place at the Barrington Theatre in Ferndown between 1pm and 3pm, followed by a ploughman’s supper quiz commencing at 7pm at St Mary’s Church. A raffle will also be taking place with prizes including tickets to see former ‘I’m a celebrity winner’ Joe Pasquale and a family of 4 entry to Farmer Palmers.
Cancer Research UK’s Relay For Life is a unique celebration of life and hope which unites communities to help beat cancer and culminates in a fantastic family and team event. It provides the opportunity for survivors to celebrate, carers to be recognised, for everyone involved to remember those lost and ultimately to celebrate life, in an effort to raise as much money as possible to beat cancer.
