Hundreds drag planes for charity at Bournemouth Airport
The 15th annual Dorset Plane Pull saw 21 teams of 20 people pull a 35,000kg Boeing 737 across a 50m distance for charity.
A total of 21 teams of up to 20 people each gathered at Bournemouth Airport on Bank Holiday Monday to take part in the 15th annual Dorset Plane Pull.
The teams were challenged to drag a Boeing 737, which weighs 35,000kg, across a 50m distance, all in aid of charity. According to the organisers, the plane weighs the equivalent of over seven elephants.
The Dorset Plane Pull was first held in 2009, and to date the event has raised over £304,000 for a variety of national and local charities.
Event co-founder Richard Griffin said: “We are delighted to be here once again and to see the return of many regular charities as well as some newcomers. Over 400 people have enrolled to take on this unique challenge.”
Kyrie Griffin, event co-founder, added: “It’s a brilliant community day. There’s a bit of competitiveness which is all in the spirit of raising money for charity.
“A massive thank you to everyone for all their support, to all the businesses, volunteers and charities.”
Trophies were awarded to three teams for the best fancy dress, best team name and the fastest pull time. This year’s victors were team Tele Tuggies, raising funds for the Kirsty Louise Streek Foundation, who completed the challenge in a mere 29.47 seconds. Charity Dreamflight and their team ‘Alan’s Superheros’ took the best fancy dress award with a team of 20 superhero-inspired costumes, and ‘No Leg Room Needed’ lifted the trophy for the best team name, raising funds for BLESMA, the limbless veterans’ charity.
The day was supported by many national and local businesses, including local firm European Aviation who provided the Boeing 737.
