A man has been jailed for six months for driving around with a smashed windscreen and buckled roof following a fatal collision in Bournemouth.
Daniel Alan Clark, 26 and of Broxbourne in Hertfordshire, was sentenced at Bournemouth Crown Court on 15 April, after pleading guilty to dangerous driving. The charge only relates to his driving following the road traffic collision.
Clark was also disqualified from driving for two years and three months and told he would have to take an extended driving test before he can apply for his licence back.
The court heard that just after 1am on Saturday 9 May 2015, Clark was driving his white Peugeot 106 along Christchurch Road toward Boscombe when it was in collision with a pedestrian who was crossing the road close to Boscombe Gardens.
The collision caused significant damage to the front of the car, the front windscreen and roof panel of the vehicle.
The front windscreen was extensively cracked and had been forced inward and the top offside corner had detached from the main frame of the car. The front offside section of the roof was buckled downward and forced into the driver’s compartment and the driver’s door no longer fitted into the door frame, the court was told.
Collision investigators told the court that the damage caused to the vehicle would no doubt make it near impossible to see out of the front windscreen.
Following the collision, Clark continued to drive along Christchurch Road, turning right against a red traffic light into Boscombe Spa Road. It then continued onto Sea Road before being located later on Boscombe Overcliff Drive.
Fiona Welcome, 42 and of Bournemouth, died at the scene.
