A man who repeatedly slashed another man across the head and face in a frenzied knife attack has been jailed for eight years.
Jason Darby, 45 and of no fixed abode, was sentenced at Winchester Crown Court on 17 March, after pleading guilty to wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
He was told he would have to serve at least two thirds of his sentence before being considered for parole. He will also be the subject of an extended licence period of 11 years.
The court heard that at around 7pm on Monday 31 August 2015, Darby visited the victim at his home in Westbourne Park Road in Bournemouth to discuss his impending eviction and the possibility of staying there. They had both been drinking red wine.
At around 10pm and without any trigger or warning, Darby grabbed a steak knife and began slashing the man across his face and head.
The victim, who is aged in his 60s, was taken to Poole Hospital for treatment to cuts to his ear, nose, both hands and his head. He underwent surgery for some of his injuries.
Darby was subsequently arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.
Detective Constable Shanena Cornwell, of Bournemouth CID, said: “This was a vicious and unprovoked attack. The victim sustained defensive cuts to his hands as he tried to protect himself from Darby.
“I hope the sentence handed out today sends a very clear message that Dorset Police will not tolerate violent crime and anyone committing such offences will be arrested, charged and dealt with robustly by the courts.”
