When the new International chairman and immediate Past President of Verwood Rotary Club, Clive Grove, was made aware of the plight of the victims of the Nepalese earthquake and their need for warm clothing for the winter season, he resolved to do something about it.
Clive had links with Nepal in that he had spent some time trekking in the mountains. He also had contacts with the P&O Cruise Line, who have a number of Nepalese in their crews.
He made contact with a number of local organisations who agreed to knit for Nepal.
A total of 1945 knitted hats, 346 jumpers, 195 pairs of gloves, 75 scarves and 102 blankets were packed in plastic bags, and collected by the post room staff of Carnival UK, Southampton, for onward transportation to Nepal.
Some of the organisations who contributed knitted items were: The Salvation Army, U3A, Verwood Arts & Crafts, Verwood & Three Legged Cross Twinning Association, Verwood Rotary Ladies, Verwood Heritage Centre, WI, TWG, local Churches, Verwood Horticultural Society, other Rotary Clubs, friends and relatives. Many of those taking part offered to do so again when the need arises.
