Conquering the peaks for charity
Four local supporters of the Bournemouth and District branch of the Multiple Sclerosis Society recently took on and conquered the formidable 3 Peaks Challenge.
The peak encounter saw them start at the foot of Ben Nevis and finish at the foot of Snowdon, having reached all three summits of Ben Nevis, Scotland’s biggest mountain at 1,344m, Scafell Pike, England’s tallest mountain at 978m and Snowdon, the biggest mountain in Wales at 1,085m.
Steve Mason and Dave Stevens, the runners involved, ran and walked a total of 26.2 miles, and encountered 54,904 steps (the equivalent of 919 flights of stairs) on their marathon journey. They were ably supported by Barry Froud and Mark Gibson who between them drove the support vehicle – clocking up over 1,000 miles.
A record time of 18 hrs 41 minutes included driving between the climbs and, to date, the magnificent sum of £6,000 has been pledged. Further donations are welcome and can be made using the link www.justgiving.com/fundraising/24hour3peaksmsclimb
All money raised will go to the local branch of the Society, which relies entirely on donations to survive and is run mainly by volunteers. The branch at The Osborne Centre, Church Lane, West Parley provides a neuro gym, exercise classes, hairdressing salon, craft room and coffee lounge, which accesses into a secluded, well-maintained garden.
The branch also provides a three-course lunch, cooked on the premises.
There are also Counselling, Support and Carers groups for members with MS and their families.
