Odd Man In
Broadstone Players Theatre Company
Review by Marilyn Barber
Three actors who are new to the players are making an impressive debut this week in this rather good comedy.
Adapted by Robin Maugham from a French play by Claude Magnier it tells the story of a married couple whose life is invaded by a stranger who bursts into their remote cottage.
Kerry Stevenson impresses as Jane Maxwell in the first moments of the play as she is so expressive – and yet natural – and she maintains this throughout the ensuing chaos as the fickle wife.
Her involvement with several productions over the years has certainly stood her in good stead.
And it is difficult to believe that her real-life partner Ben Marshall – who plays her husband George – had never acted before as he puts in a good well-rounded performance.
The third member of the cast Zach Braid provides a good deal of amusement as Mervn Browne, the interloper, and I hope he won’t be offended if I suggest that he would be perfect for upper class roles in period dramas. His body language and facial expressions added a great deal of humour to this fun play.
As always, this group provided an excellent stage set, and congratulations to Alyssa Thompson-Mitchell for this was just her second go at directing.
Running until Saturday 20 May, it makes a good evening out.
