Paragolfer will help Wimborne teenager achieve golf challenge
A Wimborne teenager with cerebral palsy will be attempting 18 holes of golf to raise funds for disability golf charity, Golfing 4 All, on 5 April.
Having cerebral palsy hasn’t deterred 19-year-old Charlie Williams from attempting a full 18 holes of golf to benefit a disability golf charity.
The Wimborne sports enthusiast will be on the green at Ferndown Forest Golf Club on Wednesday 5 April to raise funds for Golfing 4 All.
Charlie cannot stand unsupported, but he will be using a special piece of equipment, the Paragolfer, that allows him – and others with mobility difficulties – to play confidently and safely.
Golfing 4 All was set up in 2010, by the parents of Matthew Purchase, a young Wimborne man who sustained a severe head injury in an accident a few years before. Since then, the charity has given many other people with physical disabilities the chance to play golf.
Charlie is very keen on sport, and is a founder-member of the local wheelchair rugby team, the Dorset Destroyers. He completed the London Mini Wheelchair Marathon in 2011, raising over £3,000 for Victoria Education Centre and Poole Sailability.
His new challenge is to help Golfing 4 All raise funds to allow others to benefit from using the Paragolfer.
“I’ve never done this many holes before,” says Charlie, “and I know it’s going to be a very long day to achieve a full 18 holes, but I really like playing, and couldn’t do it at all without the Paragolfer. Any money I raise will help others to have the same enjoyment.”
Charlie will be supported by coach Darren Stratman, and he hopes other golfers will come along on the day to keep his spirits up.
