Poole councillors are recommending not to proceed with proposals to extend the car parking pay and display scheme in roads near to Poole’s beaches and the implementation of car parking charges in some of the borough’s parks.
In reaching the decision last night, members of the Place Overview and Scrutiny Committee considered the results of the recent public consultation. Over 2,000 responses were received to the consultation on parking near beaches and over 1,700 responses were received regarding the proposals to implement car parking charges in some of the parks. In addition five petitions were received by the council objecting to the proposals.
The recommendation of the committee will now be presented to cabinet at their meeting on 14 June for a decision.
Councillor Drew Mellor, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Transportation, Borough of Poole, said: “I would like to thank the local community for engaging so thoroughly with the council on these proposals.”
Councillors also voted at last night’s meeting to recommend to cabinet the introduction of car parking charges at Upton Country Park from Spring 2017.
Over 1,200 people responded to this consultation and their feedback has led to the original proposals being amended for Upton Country Park:
• The fee structure will be simplified by merging weekend and peak times
• The price of an annual permit will be reduced from £50 to £40
• A two hour rate will be introduced
The money raised through car parking fees will go directly towards supporting the Park enabling it to become self-financing in the future.

This will help enable us to keep the park a much loved and safe place while also allowing us to make the necessary maintenance and improvements to ensure Upton Country Park remains a fantastic place for residents and visitors alike both now and in the future.”
Councillor Andy Garner-Watts, Chairman of Place Overview and Scrutiny Committee, Borough of Poole, said: “I was very pleased with the significant public response to the consultation, which was a very thorough and comprehensive process. The recommendations of the Overview and Scrutiny Committee will now be presented to Cabinet for final decision.”
