Poole’s athletes have been celebrated at the annual awards ceremony held at Magna Academy School, Poole, on Wednesday 21 September.
Organised by Poole Sports Council in partnership with Borough of Poole’s Culture and Community Learning Service, the awards ceremony celebrated the sporting achievements of individuals, teams and those who have shown ongoing dedication to a sport. The event saw presentations for a wide variety of sports, including badminton, climbing, athletics and swimming.
For the fourth year, the awards were sponsored by the Everyone Active Leisure Centres in Poole. Cllr Sean Gabriel presented the Everyone Active Sports Trophies to Longfleet Youth FC, Matthew Howcroft and Chloe Thomas.
Mike Towner, of Poole Runners, was awarded the Freddie Rowe Sports Cup in recognition of his outstanding dedication and services to athletics, particularly for his huge contribution in organising many annual running events around Poole including the very popular Festival of Running.
Richard Yates, Chairman of Poole Sports Council, said: “Each year, we ask local sports organisations and schools to tell us about their sporting successes and identify volunteers who go above and beyond to ensure the smooth running of their sports club. The evening is to recognise sporting success and contribution that Poole has seen over the last year in many different sports.”
Councillor Xena Dion, the Mayor of Poole, who presented the Certificates of Commendation said: “It was my pleasure and honour to attend the event because I understand the huge amount of hard work and commitment that people nominated for the awards have put into their particular sport, which certainly wins my respect. It was inspiring to hear about the huge amount of sporting talent there is in Poole.”
Councillor Mohan Iyengar, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Economy, Culture and Leisure, Borough of Poole, said: “I would like to congratulate the award winners and to recognise the much broader group of people who show commitment to their own exercise and sports, and who encourage others to do so.”
Nominations for next year’s Sports Awards will be invited in April 2017. For further information, please contact the Recreation Development Team at Borough of Poole on 01202 261306.
