Having been awarded a major accolade after just one year, Purbeck Marathon is now open for entries.
The specialist running magazine Runners’ World rated the challenging event the third best marathon in the UK, beating many well-established ones including the world-famous London Marathon. The review noted the toughness of the event as well as the scenery and the locally-themed goody bags that were handed to every finisher and included both Isle of Purbeck Beer and Purbeck Ice Cream.
The course, with nearly 3,000 feet of climbs, is a predominately off-road marathon that is challenging and rewarding. It starts and finishes in Swanage and, weather permitting, there are some stunning views of Portland, Poole Harbour and the Isle of Wight along the route. There are a number of hard climbs and uneven paths so it is very different from running a road-based city marathon.
Race Director Rose Clarke who acknowledged all the hard work that went into creating the first unique event in 2012 and achieving major recognition says, “The marathon is a community event, which is not only great to run but highlights the beauty of our beloved Isle of Purbeck and raises much needed funds for local charities.”
The second Purbeck Marathon takes place on 15 September 2013 and entry numbers are limited due to the nature of the terrain. Enter on line www.runnersworld.co.uk or with an entry form that can be downloaded from www.thepurbeckmarathon.co.uk where further information is also available.
