The Big Friendly Read hopes to get children reading on a giant scale.
Poole youngster’s are invited to take part in 2016’s exciting Roald Dahl-themed Summer Reading Challenge.
Poole Libraries are very excited to be working with The Roald Dahl Literary Estate this year to celebrate Roald Dahl 100, an event being held in honour of the renowned writer’s 100th Birthday. The challenge will feature some of Roald Dahl’s best-loved characters, and the amazing artwork of his principal illustrator, Sir Quentin Blake.
From the 16 July until the 10 September, all children up to the age of 11 can sign up at their local Poole Library to complete the challenge. By reading six library books of their choice over the summer, children can collect six limited edition Quentin Blake collector cards. Each card celebrates a popular Dahl theme: mischief, invention, adventure, wordplay, child champions, and friendship. There are also stickers, BFG bookmarks, and for those completing the challenge: chocolates, medals, and certificates.
Children who complete the challenge can take part in a Charlie and the Chocolate Factory-inspired ‘Gold Ticket competition’.
The Gold Ticket competition will see children receive a Neapolitan chocolate upon completion and return of their sixth book. There are a series of golden tickets hidden inside the chocolates, and numerous Roald Dahl themed prizes to be won by those lucky finders, including a limited edition Quentin Blake print.
Throughout the summer holidays, there will also be Big Friendly Read events and activities happening at all Poole libraries. These include a theatrical storytelling inspired by popular Roald Dahl stories The Twits and The Enormous Crocodile, a Roald Dahl- themed coding event, and a Stop Motion animation workshop. Plus, there will be lots of fun crafts, games and quizzes available. Look out for the summer edition of What’s On For Children brochure, available soon in libraries and online.
Every year all schools in Poole compete for the Poole Libraries Summer Reading Challenge Schools Award. The special presentation plaque is won by the school with the highest number of participants in the Summer Reading Challenge.
